Create a Nostr account with 24 recovery words

Choose Create New when you want a new Nostr identity. The extension generates 24 recovery words and derives your keys from them. You do not need to enter an email address or phone number.

Create and back up your identity

  1. Open the extension popup. On first setup, select Continue, then Create New.
  2. Reveal your recovery phrase in a private place. Write all 24 words in their exact order and store them securely.
  3. Use the backup controls if you want a file copy. A plain-text download contains the unencrypted phrase; protect it accordingly. An encrypted backup needs its own backup password.
  4. Confirm that you have saved the phrase. Complete the backup check by filling the missing words from your own saved copy.

Anyone with your recovery words can recover this identity. Keep them private. Do not use words from a video, screenshot or another person's account. There is no email reset that can replace a lost phrase.

Protect this browser

  1. Choose a timed auto-lock setting, then set and confirm a local vault password. Keep the password somewhere you can recover it.
  2. Continue through the remaining setup. Follow suggestions are optional; skip them if you prefer to choose people later.
  3. At the completion screen, select Get Started. Check your public key in the popup, then lock the vault when you finish.

The vault password unlocks this browser's stored keys. Your recovery phrase restores the identity. Save both, and do not treat one as a substitute for the other.

Already have the identity you want? Use Import Key or Backup instead of creating another one. Compare all four setup methods.

Account previews and finishing setup

When a main recovery phrase already exists, Create New opens New Sub-Account. It uses that phrase with another derivation path; it does not generate a second recovery phrase. Edit the name if needed. The npub and hex public keys appear below their labels in accent color, shortened in the middle. Copy icons copy the complete values. Advanced sits below the keys and opens the path editor; leave the proposed path unless you need a specific one.

Follow suggestions show names and small pictures from verified public profiles when available. The extension reuses a shared cache for 30 minutes, keeping at most 500 profiles, and looks up missing metadata at purplepag.es. The public author key is sent to that directory; images load separately from the profile's image host. Missing profiles fall back to a shortened key. Loading does not block selection or Skip for now.

The completion screen puts the account summary and Get Started at the bottom. It shows the account name and a copyable public key; only derived sub-accounts are described as sharing the main seed phrase. New accounts can use global rules or copy site overrides from another account. Authentication grants stay separate.
